Being OSA student members...

Student Members are an important and active part of the OSA community. Student Member benefits are built around the unique needs of those preparing to enter the professional world of optics.
Establishing your membership while you are a student is particularly useful since OSA provides you with information resources, networking opportunities and a variety of professional services that will get you off to a great start and support you throughout your career.

  • Online Journal Subscription
Student members may choose to receive JOSA A, JOSA B, Optics Letters or the Journal of Optical Networking free of charge, OR you may select Applied Optics, published two times a month for $26 - a 50% reduction.
  • Free OPN Subscription
Optics & Photonics News (OPN), OSA's monthly news magazine, blends industry reports and in-depth features with timely technical articles accessible to the entire optics and photonics community.
  • Free Physics Today Subscription
Through its affiliation with the American Institute of Physics (AIP), OSA offers its members a complimentary subscription to Physics Today, an important, informative monthly resource.
  • Incubic/Milton Chang Student Travel Grants
This program provides 20 grants of up to $500 to assist students with their travel expenses when they present papers during Frontiers in Optics(FiO) and the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO).
  • WORKinOPTICS.com
OSA's high-powered career search engine is dedicated to serving the recruiting and job placement needs of its membership. Industry employment trend updates, customized job searches by geography, title or employer, and a targeted resume bank are a few of the site's many features.
  • Employment Center
A highlight of the OSA Annual Meeting and large conferences, the Employment Center gives students an opportunity to review job openings, interview with top companies and participate in a resume bank.
  • Student Chapters
OSA Student Chapters provide you with an important link to your academic colleagues. These chapters enable you to build credentials and participate in important local activities and educational projects. OSA supports its Student Chapters with information resources, activities and financial assistance. Students are encouraged to join their institution's Student Chapter.
  • Email Alias
This service enables members to synchronize any email address with their OSA address. That way, if you move or frequently change email accounts you do not have to inform all your colleagues and contacts.
  • OSA Journals
In addition to one free online journal, Student Members receive special discounts on OSA's fine collection of peer-reviewed books and journals, such as JOSA A, JOSA B, Optics Letters, Applied Optics, Journal of Lightwave Technology and OSA co-published journals.
  • Discounted Registration
Student members attend OSA conferences, exhibits and educational sessions at reduced registration rates. The OSA Annual Meeting, the Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) and more than 20 topical meetings are among the many annual events hosted by OSA.
  • Technical Groups
OSA members are encouraged to join up to five Technical Groups. This excellent networking opportunity will ensure that you receive information about events and publications directly related to your areas of interest.
  • Online Student Forum
Through the OSA Web site, student members can directly contact experts in a variety of technical and application areas. Use this important resource to gain insight from OSA members with expertise in industry, government and academia.
